The Great Indian Love Stories

“The great” in the beginning of the Indian love stories may not be a word relevant to the context but apparently everything Indian starts with exclamation “the great”.And the love stories here are more or less related to Bollywood where they may be not be love stories but somehow sneak into the list of umpteen legends and sagas.

Before we hit the spot and because we are talking about the love stories lets try to to revive the most beautiful romantic scene wrapped inside our brain (ofcourse with the background score); and does that take you to a field of yellow mustard flowers somewhere in Punjab with  Simran in her whiteSalwar kameez  and Raj with his Guitar and the  cowboy attire?  So topping on the list is undoubtely DDLJ which infallibly and ritualistically make it to the special screening at the multiplexes every year on the  Valentines day. So what makes it one of the best?

Dilwaley Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge was evidently made keeping in view of the consumerism and saleability  factor of the Indian culture. The Om jai jagdish  act of Simran, the plight of girls in arranged marriages  with a  tadka of “Ghar aaja pardesi” emotions  along with a ‘chutki bhar’ of great Indian wedding ceremonies and ‘Karwa chauth’  made a complete potpourri. The movie in short was something that held the the emotional viability of the Indian audience.

We have never had a dearth of love stories here considering all versions of Devdas ,Mughal-e-azam, and the desi Romeo -Juliet alone.But definitely Qayamat se Qayamat Tak forced many early bloomers to confess their irrevocable love for Aamir and Juhi! In QSQT we saw a naive young teen Rashmi fall for the slick and smashing young man and also saw her professing her love for him unlike the stereotypical love stories where only men are expected to declare their perpetual love for the leading lady. The movie dwindled around the theme of infatuation achieving the status of eternal love amidst adversities which was more than acceptable by the Indian audience.

While talking about love stories,Salman khan also has a lot to his credit for his ‘Prem’ avatars -his fantastic chemistry with Madhuri. In Hum Apke Hai Kaun, the song Mere rang mein from Maine Pyaar Kiya and finally Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. HAHK was an Indian family drama with numerous characters with beautiful songs and the gorgeous Madhuri to spice it up.Maine pyaar kiya, whereas had the rich-poor barrier that seperates the love birds which obviously is overcome by the hero along with his regular baring and some daring acts-the theme that had always caught the fancy of the Indian audience. HDDCS  rejuvinated the obsolete concept of the quintessential pativrata naari  and as perks we had the offscreen saga running parallel too. Then we have the offbeat Cheeni Kum with lots of off-the-wall  dialogues and great songs where the Big B romanced  much younger Tabu.

On an ending note, it would be unfair to ignore an  enticing Sridevi in her body hugging saree doing the kaate nahi katthe in Mr India or Rahul realising the love of his life  instantly on seeing Anjali’spallu drop in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. So Bollywood has fully justified the wholesome entertainment status considering the reel and real delights it has offered so far by making and remaking movies on all known love stories. Of late the themes and movies have evolved-thanks to  the numerous  young filmmakers for their offbeat  and exceptional scripts and ideas on modern love stories that run parallel to the real life situations like Anurag Basu, Farhan Akhtar and Balki to name a few. So hopefully the Bollywood will keep us bewitched in its sheer charm and glory forever and make us fall in love yet again!

Want to add a few more stories to the list:
Ostrich, Friends with Benefits and Mergers & Acquisitions from Skid Marks of Logic.

It’s a book I’ve written and there is noone you fall in love with more than characters you’ve created.
